Comrades – Naysayers “doubleplusungood”

UPDATE:  Although too late to go into detail – I believe I have quite literally, with some indirect help from Gord Henderson; as well as some careful consideration of the events in the last few months, stumbled upon the rationale behind the plan.  It is everything that has been said; but more importantly it is everything that has not been said (That’s a small clue).

But I need my sleep.  So until tomorrow, comrades…

Comrades.

For the purpose of controlling public opinion, the Central Committee deems it necessary at this juncture to set up a central control commission in accordance with the Official City Line.  Its aim is to tighten civic discipline in the new period of intense class struggle, step up the struggle against all kinds of violations of the Official City Line and of discipline and in particular guard against the recurrence of cases like the naysaying alliance which seriously jeopardizes the interests of the Official City Line.

Against them we are always invincible.

We should take this attitude towards these comrades, that is, we should not only observe but also help them, in the hope that they will correct their mistakes. In other words, we should not only observe them to see whether they are going to correct their mistakes but also help them to do so. Everybody needs help.

Okay – enough with the dramatics – I believe those who follow and actually understand my blog will understand the point I’m making.

What prompted this unusual outburst you ask – the headline of the Star article on the fifth page today:

“Naysayer calls plan pie in sky.”

My initial reaction is reflected in the prose above adapted from a speech of the Central Planning Committee of China in 1955.

Several writers to the Star forums and a few commentators on this blog have discussed the fact that we already have a “canal” in Windsor called the Detroit River that is underutilized.

In going through the Star archives I attempted to find evidence of those who have spoken out against specific plans presented and the treatment they received in the coverage.

The most recent example I could find were those “handful” of people opposed to the development of a riverfront Peace Beacon.  The sentence that best illustrates this is of Gary Parent of the District Labour Council:

Parent said he and other objectors will be “following very closely” any future commercial development on the riverfront.

Today, “naysayer” is repeatedly used to describe those who opine against an official city line and directed at taxpaying Windsor residents nonetheless.

Princeton University defines naysayer as, “someone with an aggressively negative attitude,” and an objector is defined as, “a person who dissents from some established policy.”  Dissent is described as, “non-agreement or opposition to an idea.”

Therefore, naysayer = “negative” and threatening; “objectors” = “non-agreement” or passive.   A consciously made decision, in my opinion.

The above mentioned headline was certainly eye-catching with readers wondering, who is the naysayer?  I could see in my minds-eye, thousands of Star subscribers flocking to the article.

Especially when Mayor Francis immediately upon the announcement of a $65,000 feasibility study said:

“When you ask, ‘Is this really going to happen?’ Just watch us,” said Francis, who, like Lewenza and other speakers at Tuesday’s art gallery announcement, denounced the “naysayers” lining up to predict this latest in a string of grand plans for the downtown west side will lead to nothing.

And I do have to ask, what naysayers?  Other than those few “co-workers” of Gord Henderson’s there weren’t any naysayers – not until Mr. Henderson and Mayor Francis “denounced” them that is.

This was a predetermined tactic (More on that tomorrow).

But why?

Although not an expert on the subject, I have studied through my university courses the use of propaganda in political messaging.

Wikipedia has a rather apt definition of the topic:

Propaganda is a concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behaviors of large numbers of people. As opposed to impartially providing information, propaganda in its most basic sense presents information in order to influence its audience. Propaganda often presents facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis, or gives loaded messages in order to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the cognitive narrative of the subject in the target audience to further a political agenda.

Not only did Gord Henderson’s column appear early in the evening before the announcement denouncing “naysayers,” AM 800 as well Mr. Creighton on A-Channel gushed over the plan and, in the case of AM 800, denounced naysayers as well.

We’ve moved from a “handful” of opponents to “quarters” of “naysayers,” (Windsor Star Editorial, July 29) which leads me to believe that the opinions, questions and/or outright criticisms of these same naysayers present a “threat” to the official city line or any possible political agenda.

For example, WeACT and other residents were successful in one respect, in getting a Mayor with an 80% approval rating to ask the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs to order an audit of the Windsor Utilities Commission last year that he and some councillors oversee.  And according to a ministry spokesperson, June Kasperski Wild at the time, “It’s not automatic. It’s not a done deal — in fact most times I say it doesn’t happen.”

But it did.

Citizen angst over a proposed property tax increase, in conjunction with Tax Cut Now Day did result in a lower rate increase.

Naysayers and bloggers with their research are clearly listened to and considering the orchestrated campaign against previously non-existent ”naysayers” this time around – feared.

And the “Central Control Commission” comprised of the Office of the Mayor and mainstream media are ready this time to combat it.

The outstanding question – if the plan is solid; acceptable and as “visionary” as stated, why the orchestrated campaign?

So comrades, ask no questions.

Ignorance is strength.

Naysayers are doubleplusungood.

  1. Chris, you have always had a researched opinion but you are negative. Sarcastic headlines like “Gondolas of Cash”

You have never responded to my points about the reality of problems with an arena in City Center West

Now you don’t respond to the fact that we will never have widespread community support to further develop the riverfront making this idea the only option to leverage that same riverfront.

I think you should continue criticising the mayor if thats what you want. Thats truly freedom of expression. But so is the media and others criticism of your stance.

I have been a vocal supporter of stimulating residential development on city center west lands since 2003 before that stance was taken up by the mayor, the Windsor Star or AM800. Do you think that I should somehow lose the right to voice my opinion of criticism of any plan that accomplishes that goal.

I’ve been called pollyana, cheerleader all kinda crazy stuff but perservere, you get called naysayer and accuse everyone of being a communist.

Most of all, I find it absolutely astounding that Windsor’s 2nd biggest critic and watchdog is against people criticizing him in the most mildest form by calling him a naysayer.

You have criticised me often and I respect your right to do that. I’ve never said your criticism of me should not be allowed for whatever reason. I understand and accept that if a person is going to dish it out, then your skin better be thick enough to take it.

Call me any name you want, but don’t say that your freedom of expression supercedes my freedom of expression.

    Part of the job

  2. P.S. I know thats not what you said, just a generalization to everyone. But crying the victim because others are calling you names means the only way to rectify would take away their freedom of expression.

  3. Wow – must have struck a nerve did I Mr. Boscariol? Might I recommend you lighten up a bit and get a sense of humour – obviously literary style is lost on you.

And considering the names you’ve called certain people…

Yes – “I believe those who follow and actually understand my blog will understand the point I’m making.”

    Need I say more?

And wow – what insight you possess. I didn’t realise I was calling Mayor Francis a communist – in fact, I didn’t realise I was a target of the anti-naysayer campaign.

And I”m only the No. 2 critic? I guess I have my work cut out for me don’t I?

And thank you for your blessings in continuing my work – didn’t realise it was required.

  4. HA HA HA!

  5. Just love the new banner Comrade!

This newest reveal of the grandest of grandest ideas was exactly what you think it was, orchrestrated! Several sources told me that this canal idea was presented to specific business interests, the media and other grand poohpaws about four or so months ago, and they all gave up their first borns as hostages to make sure that they keep it secret. I keep telling people in this city that with all the in camera meetings, Eddie is giving dancing lessons to all of city council and everyone that has to deal with him! Oh, and the dances they are learning is the Knee-Jerk and the Side Step. What is so funny is my imagination of all the males on council dancing in heels and backwards as the Voice likes to lead!

There will be a whole lot of naysayers coming our way very shortly according to Pew Research’s new study:

    Baby Boomers: The Gloomiest Generation

“America’s baby boomers are in a collective funk. Members of the large generation born from 1946 to 1964 are more downbeat about their lives than are adults who are younger or older, according to a new Pew Research Center Social and Demographic Trends survey.

Not only do boomers give their overall quality of life a lower rating than adults in other generations, they also are more likely to worry that their incomes won’t keep up with inflation — this despite the fact that boomers enjoy the highest incomes of any age group….”

    http://pewresearch.org/pubs/880/baby-boomers-the-gloomiest-generation

And there are a lot of us in Windsor to galvinize into action if we don’t like what this city administration is doing or NOT doing.

    Placebo Camrade!

  6. I thought for sure someone hacked your site……..

I wanted them to carve out Wyandotte from end to end.
That would be a feat worthy. Take a boat ride from the arena to the casino.
Then some smart*** said that you could do that after the streets flood in a rainstorm.
    Talk about a naysayer.

Then again, I think too big sometimes.

  7. Nope – no hacking – yet…

I dust off the satirical military garb whenever I believe we’re being subjected to propaganda.

I thought perhaps we could use the Grand Marais ditch – convert it to a canal as well.

We could then run it down Indian Road to the docks in Sandwich Towne.

Get the Bridge Company to renaturalize the neighbourhood, coupled with a cross city canal …

  8. Urbanrat -

Shhhh! Don’t be a naysayer now. We can’t upset people.

  9. 1urbanrat – that would be Eddie’s MO – for both Schwartz extravaganzas Eddie had shopped the ideas to VIPs for many months in advance, gathering their comments and then sending Schwartz back to his office to tweak things so their concerns had been addressed. That’s his method of bullet proofing his plans.

It’s sort of the antithesis of true leadership actually and that brings me to my point about naysayers et al …

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I always felt that the Windsor blogs were the natural reaction to the Windsor Star and AM 800. Witness the blatant butt-kissing of its lead columnist, and calling Eduardo “visionary”. If, as urbanrat says, this idea has been vetted with VIPs for the past couple of months, why doesn’t the Star report that? Why was so much time spent vetting an idea when you could have gone straight to a feasibility study and THEN make an announcement when you know if it will actually work or not.

I don’t think that’s the goal here, to actually build this. There is another agenda here by the mayor.

    Nazdravlje tovarish!

  10. Camrade, can you say “Billion”. Now, I also see how Tecumseh got Windsors Arena. Keep on eye on that land deal. There is Fly sh%t in the pita bread.
